Dr. Simphiwe Mayisela

Managing Director SS-Consulting & Sessional Lecturer: Cybersecurity at University of the Witwatersrand
Background

I have spent more than 23 years working in cybersecurity, technology risk and governance across banking, government, telecommunications, gaming, hospitality and consulting. Over that time, my work has evolved from hands-on information security into senior leadership, strategic advisory and governance, with an increasing focus on helping organisations understand where technology risk becomes business risk.

I founded SS-Consulting to advise public- and private-sector organisations on cybersecurity strategy, ICT governance, risk management, regulatory compliance, security assurance and organisational resilience. My work has included developing cybersecurity strategies and governance frameworks, assessing critical environments, and presenting cybersecurity and technology risk matters to executive teams and board committees, including Audit and Risk Committees.

My experience has also extended beyond individual organisations. I was appointed by the SADC Secretariat as a Senior-Level Short-Term Expert, contributing to regional initiatives on FinTech development, cybercrime legislation, regulation and cyber resilience across Southern Africa. The assignment involved engaging with banks, central banks, regulators, FinTech bodies and other stakeholders across the region.
Professional and industry development has also been an important part of my career. I established the inaugural South African Chapter of ISC² and served as its Founder President. I have also contributed to a number of advisory and technical panels involving organisations including the CSIR, MICT SETA and BankSETA. In addition, I lecture in cybersecurity at Wits and contribute to doctoral supervision through UNISA.
Ethics and accountability are central to how I work. In 2024, I received OUTA’s Moral Courage Recognition Certificate, recognising actions taken in circumstances where maintaining professional integrity required personal and professional resolve.

I am now looking to broaden my contribution through independent board, board committee and strategic advisory appointments. I am particularly interested in Audit and Risk, Ethics and ICT Governance roles where informed oversight of cybersecurity, technology risk, privacy, responsible AI, digital transformation and organisational resilience can strengthen decision-making and accountability.

I remain actively involved in SS-Consulting, academic work and the development of cybersecurity professionals, while continuing to expand my contribution at board and executive level.
