Prof Topside E. Mathonsi is currently an Associate Professor and HoD in the Department of Information Technology, Faculty of ICT at TUT, South Africa. At TUT, his roles include curriculum design, administration, teaching, research, and supervision of postgraduate students. His current research focus is the Wireless Communication Systems, Cybersecurity, 5G, IoT, SDN & Fog Computing. He has been an author and co-author of over 120 publications, including book chapters, journal articles, and conference papers. Prof. Mathonsi has been a reviewer of national and international conferences and journals, and a DHET Sub-panel Reviewer in Engineering and Technology research areas from 2025 to 2027. He has been an examiner for masters and doctoral degrees at UCT, UKZN, DUT, CUT, UNISA, Wits, University of Zambia, & University of Botswana. He is a member of international and national organizations, namely IAENG, IITPSA, IACSIT (Senior Member), and IEEE. Prof Mathonsi has been invited as a presenter/speaker/ keynote speaker / plenary addresses at the 6th Tshwane Varsity Hackathon (TVH), Huawei ICT Academy Instructor Summit 2024, AI Expo Africa 2024 & 2025, Online AI Symposium 2024, The third IEEE Wireless Africa Conference (WAC) 2025, TUT Licence to Lead, Academic Orientation Programme for New Academic Managers, European Union Training Project (Erasmus+ project), ProCYD (Professionalization and Digitalization) Program 2025, PAN-AFRICAN AIS 2025, among many others. The invitations to present/speak, selected as a panel member, and appointed as an examiner suggest that his research and expertise are valued by the broader academic and industry community. In addition, he has received awards and nominations which include the Younger Researcher of the Year (2023&2024) and Runner-Up Senior Researcher of the Year (2023) from the Faculty of ICT, TUT, Nominated for the prestigious TW Kambule-NSTF 2023/2024 & 2024/2025 Award for Emerging Researchers; Best Computer Science Reviewer, SAICSIT 2025, Younger Researcher of the Year (2022); Runner-Up Emerging Researcher (2022); Institutional Award, Research in Training of the Year (Male) 2019-2020, TUT; Emerging Researcher of the Year 2019-2020, Faculty of ICT, Lecturer of the Year 2018 (Merit Award), Younger Research of the Year 2017 & 2018, Faculty of ICT, TUT; Huawei Excellent Instructor 2017-2018 & 2020; and best Student Paper award at WCECS 2014. Professor Mathonsi’s achievements highlight his outstanding research contributions, impactful teaching, and unwavering dedication to service.
